My Theory

Today in Philosophy & Ethics class, a guy asked why people are so easily offended these days.

I have a theory.

It's not that people are more offended these days than they used to be.  It was never cool to offend people.  People have always been fairly polite about other's feelings.  My theory is that in the last decade or so people have been getting more and more arrogant about their feelings and more and more vocal about their beliefs.  People never like to be told they are wrong and so because people have been more vocal about their different beliefs it appears to be that people are more offended, but in actuality people are just as offended, but people are more vocal.

That's it.

  1. totally agree. Its not that people get offended more, it is that people are more rude... there used to be something called "being polite" that no one seems to take seriously anymore... thus more rude people = more offended people...
